The Prayer that Breaks Through: Luke 18:1-8

When I was living with my parents, we had an outside sink. It was a square concrete structure with a tap hanging over it. I remembered a time when the tap was leaking, drip, drip, drip, one drop of water at a time. After a while, that one-drop of water cracked the concrete. The top layer of the floor in the sink was gone. And as I read Jesus's parable in Luke 18 about the persistent widow, I remembered my parents’ old sink. A drop of water would seem ineffective against concrete, but continuous drops over a period of time was detrimental to the concrete surface. And same effect can be achieved with persistent prayer. Prayer is a direct line to the throne of Grace, and there are Biblical principles that can boost our prayer life. One of them is persistence.

The widow in Jesus's parable was a vulnerable and helpless woman because she had no family to uphold her cause. Her need for justice had become her daily drive. she did not allow the unrighteousness of the judge, his lack of fear towards God, or his disregard towards men to deter her. Every silent treatment or denial from that judge only strengthened her resolve to return the next day.

The degree of your need should dictate your attitude of persistence. Continue, even when the Lord seems silent. He is not ignoring your needs. Jesus said: will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you he will see that they get justice and quickly. However, when the Son of man comes will he find faith on the earth? (Luke 18:1-8). Jesus connected his coming to preservation of faith. The faith that preserves is the same faith that fuels persistence. It's the faith that says, "I will not stop until I receive my healing, my deliverance, the restoration of my marriage; I will not stop until I am free from the chains that bind me”.

A woman was taking her 8-year-old daughter to school and as they walked by a pet shop, the child saw a puppy and fell in love on sight. She pleaded with her mom to buy her the pup, and her mom promised that she will. That same day as they headed home and passed the pet shop, the little girl noticed the puppy was no longer in the cage. She panicked and began to cry that someone took her pup. What the little girl did not know is that her mom went back to the pet shop and bought the pup but asked the shop owner to keep it in the back until her daughter's birthday. The little girl was heartbroken because what she desired seemed to be lost. Yet, on her birthday, the pup was delivered, and it was all smiles and joy.

Sometimes we do not get answers immediately from the Lord. Nonetheless, do not give up praying. As with the little girl's mom, God cares about our needs. And be reminded that the Lord also gets His glory when he answers our prayers. Therefore, pray until you get that breakthrough, it may be right around the corner.
